I love our fluffy light snow, especially since we have no garage or carport. But, according to an article about predicting snowfall, there can be as little as a tenth of an inch of moisture in 10 inches of light and fluffy snowfall.

But, the main focus of the article is how new methods can help to better predict the amount of snowfall by simple calculations involving crest level wind speeds and temperatures. Interesting, so check it out.

If you look at the left sidebar of the site, you'll see an iPhone screen shot of my just-released About Taos app. I want to work on it, add photos and videos, etc. But, it's a great app right now, and it's FREE.

Taos Makes Another “Most” List

Click on image for size & mapping.It's always fun to get a news release or article in my morning news feeds that mentions Taos, especially if it's a positive mention. And, this one about being one of the "most dangerous ski slopes" isn't really negative.

I don't ski, but I do know that Al's Run is no piece of cake. Anyway, any mention of Taos in travel and vacation articles is a help. All of this recent snow is great as well.

Is Taos Real Estate a Different Ski Area Market?

Realtor.org just ran a short post about ski and vacation home markets, prices and demand. It's short, so this post is also. Actually, I think I just wanted to bring this to the attention of local sellers and brokers, as I don't think our prices have dropped as stated in the article.

In fact, I guess the question is how different (or not) the Taos real estate market might be? Or, are we losing buyers to other ski areas where prices are more attractive?

Taos Gets Good Snowboard Press

Sustained steep pitches, chutes and cliff bands everywhere with some of the biggest moguls you will ever see (which the local skiers are very proud to lay claim to) make Taos an expert rider’s wet dream on a pow day. Add a super friendly and relaxed mountain staff across the board and one of the most welcoming ski area atmospheres and the result is one of the best mountains I have ever experienced.

Just a quote from this article about boarding. Sounds like the more radical snowboard aficionados are finding Taos to be worthy of a trip. Sounds fine to me!

If You See a Lynx – Scare It Back to Colorado

It seems that the lynx is protected as either an endangered species or a threatened one in 13 states, including Colorado. But, it's not federally protected in New Mexico. As a number of the Canada lynx previously populated into Colorado have been tracked wandering into New Mexico, there is concern for their safety.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, they warrant protection, but must go onto a very long waiting list some say could be years long. There is concern that the habitat here won't support them anyway. So, if you see one, take a photo, don't hurt it, and shoo it back toward Colorado for its own safety.

El Nino – 2010 Looking Good for Moisture?

OnTheSnow.com is predicting a great winter or two for Taos due to the El Nino weather pattern that's developing. Of course, a site that is all about winter activities may be prone to over-state, so I also checked out Accuweather.com, and on their forum found this quote:

"I've been forecasting a warmer and wetter winter for most of North America in Winter 2010, plus, just before this coming winter arrives, increasing rains for the Far West, stretching into the Inter-mountain west, and the Pacific Northwest, heavy rains in the Southwestern Desert states and Southeastern U.S."

I don't ski, but wish the best for the ski areas. I do go to the woods in search of mushrooms (the edible kind), and this could be good news, as this past year wasn't a good one for them.

Geotagged Images & Maps on This Site

Click on image for size & mapping.I've been working for several days on a better way to take images, tag them with their latitude and longitude, and display them on the site, both in posts and on maps. Well, I think I've finally gotten it all together. From this post going forward, if an image tells you you can see it larger and map it, you'll be taken to Flickr.com when you click on it. There you'll see my larger versions, as well as links to Google Street maps, Satellite view, Google Earth, and even topological maps. The image location will be marked for you. Try it with the image in this post of the fish at the Red River Fish Hatchery, click on it.

Even better, as I take new photos, they're added to a great mapping site, and you can view maps by items of interest in the Taos area. As each map has the links to the others at the top, I'll just take you here to the Taos Arts Map as an example. All are easily accessed from the Maps tab at the top of every page. You can zoom, change map type, and mouse over the icons or the images for more information.

I'm trying to map every hotel, motel, b&b, business, building, restaurant, gallery, studio, horse trail, hiking trail and campground in the Enchanted Circle area. To do that, I need to take a photo at the site, but I don't mind, and it's free. I want this to be the best site on the Web for Taos area information. So, if you have a business or favorite location you want mapped, email it to me, and I'll move it up higher on the list. These maps will get more on them as quickly as I can take the photos.

Around the Enchanted Circle

I'll be adding to this map all the time. It's all of the wonderful sights, activities and natural beauty right off the main road when you drive the Enchanted Circle. The top map will show you a photo, as well as allow you to link to the full image on Flickr and leave a comment about the place or image. The Google Earth map will help you with terrrain if you're planning a hike or other outdoor activity.
