Taos Rolls Out New Express Shuttle Service
Between Santa Fe & Taos

Taos, NM - May 18, 2009 - The Town of Taos announced a new express nonstop shuttle service to link New Mexico Rail Runner travelers between Taos and Santa Fe. The new service - The Taos Express - will run weekends this summer beginning June 4th.

"The Rail Runner has been such a huge success, and we are looking for ways to expand that service into Taos," explained Taos Mayor Darren Cordova. "Having the train continue into Taos is likely years away. Instead of waiting, we created the Taos Express to bring people to and from Taos easily and affordably. Our intent is to continue and expand its service after this initial pilot program run."

The Taos Express schedules are designed to coordinate with the New Mexico Rail Runner, north and southbound trains, www.nmrailrunner.com. The shuttles, which are ADA compliant, will have bike racks and room for luggage for people who want to stay for the weekend in Taos. "Over the last two years, New Mexicans have turned to public transit in greater numbers than ever," said Transportation Secretary Gary L. J. Girón. "With the addition of the Rail Runner, we have made it easier for people to connect throughout Central New Mexico and now north to Taos. This new shuttle connection is just another component of the Department's multimodal vision, and we welcome and encourage future connections throughout the state."

"We've been getting lots of inquiries from people who would like to see the Rail Runner go farther north, and that's a good indicator that more folks are discovering the convenience of what a system like this can bring to their area," says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. "One of the benefits of the Rail Runner service to Santa Fe is our ability to connect to Northern New Mexico. This shuttle is one example of how we can provide connections to communities in the north that have lasting impacts."

The Taos Express will cost $10 round trip for adults; children 10 and under are free. Taos Express rider connections to the Taos Chile Line Transportation Service will be free, in addition to extended service to Taos Ski Valley. The Santa Fe station location is the New Mexico Rail Runner Railyard District Station on Guadalupe. The shuttle stop in Taos is in the Loretto Free Parking Lot just off the Taos Plaza/Camino de la Placita - just a short walk to the center of downtown historic Taos. Taos Express travelers that connect with the Rail Runner and then buses in Santa Fe or Albuquerque will spend less than $15 one way or $30 round trip for a day or weekend of fun.

The Summer Schedule will be:

Thursday and Friday evenings:
Northbound: Leave Santa Fe at 6:30 p.m. (connect with the 5:46 p.m. northbound NMRR train #516); arrive in Taos at 8 p.m.
Southbound: Leave Taos at 4:40 p.m.; arrive in Santa Fe at 6:10 p.m. (connect with the 6:18 p.m. southbound NMRR train #517)

Saturday morning service:
Northbound: Leave Santa Fe at 11:30 a.m. (connect with the 11:15 a.m. northbound NMRR train #502); arrive in Taos at 1:00 p.m.
Southbound: Leave Taos at 6:25 a.m. arrive in Santa Fe at 7:50 a.m. (meet the 8:10 a.m. southbound NMRR train #503)

Saturday evening service:
Northbound: Leave Santa Fe at 6:25 p.m. (connect with the 6:03 p.m. northbound NMRR train #508); arrive in Taos at 8:10 p.m.
Southbound: Leave Taos at 4:20 p.m.; arrive in Santa Fe at 5:45 p.m. (connect with the 6:20 p.m. southbound NMRR train #511)

"Our intent, even during these difficult economic times, is to launch this service and work out how best tosustain it after its June through September pilot phase," Mayor Cordova added. "The New Mexico Rail Runner service an exciting and successful addition for New Mexico - something we hope eventually comes further north. Title: US 54 northbound and southbound from Carrizozo at mile marker 107 to mile marker 112
Description: On Wednesday August 10th FNF Construction, Inc. will commence the rehabilitation of the bridge that spans Cottonwood Creek at Mile Post 112 on US54 between Tularosa and Carrizozo, NM. The completion of this work requires a width restriction of 11 feet. Delays should be expected. The speed limit at the bridge has been reduced to 35 MPH and a bump on the south bound and north bound lane will be experienced. The work on this bridge will be completed near the end of April 2012. New Roadway Construction being done by FNF of New Mexico through the end of January 2012. This includes installation of new Concrete Box Culverts, Milling, Paving, Installation of 24" Culvert Pipe, new Barbed Wire Fence, and Concrete Wall Barrier. A width Restriction l be enforced on the Detour from MP 110.0 to MP 112.7 due to Temporary Concrete Barrier on the northbound and southbound shoulders in various locations. Traveling public are encouraged to adhere to Construction Signing. Speed Limit is reduced to 45 MPH and is strictly enforced. Description: US 84/64 near Lumberton Intersection- James Hamilton Construction, Inc. is contracted by the New Mexico Department of Transportation to rebuild US64 MM140-148 Broken Butt to Lumberton. Motorists will experience intermittent lane drops with a pilot car operation escort and periodic travel delays up to15 minutes. Heavy equipment will be moving in and out of work zones. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive slowly through the work zones and maintain a safe following distance for the safety of other motorists and highway crews. Description: The Hagerman Canal Bridge, at MP 23 is now open to two way traffic. The remaining construction will take place January 2012. During the construction motorists can expect short delays between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and possible one lane closures during the day. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place. Description: Roadwork in Progress: US 64 MP 62 -Bloomfield The New Mexico Department of Transportation has contracted Sterling Brothers Construction, Inc. of Aztec to rebuild US 64 from milepost 62 to 64 for two miles within the City of Bloomfield . This project lies within an urban setting located in San Juan County. The project anticipated completion is July 2012. Contractor typical work hours are from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with extended hours and weekends possible as needed. All work schedules are subject to change. TRAFFIC IMPACTS Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times with a minimum 11-foot driving lanes. Currently building In Phase II, the driving lanes will be shifted to the north and the storm drain system and pavement will be installed on the southern side of US 64. Note: Wide loads are restricted through the project. The speed limit is reduced to 35 MPH through the project. For your safety, please stay on established driveways and travel lanes. Motorists are urged to drive slowly through the work zones and maintain a safe following distance for the safety of other motorists and highway crews. Description: Eagle Nest, NM: The New Mexico Department of Transportation District 4 office and Northern Mountain Constructors Inc., announce the beginning of construction operations for the week of July 5th through July 2012. Construction hours will be Monday thru Saturday from 6:45 am to 6:00 pm. The starting mile marker is 281.8 and the end mile marker is 285. The project will consist of the following: ROADWAY RECONSTRUCTION, Pavement Sections (Flexible), Roadway Rehabilitation, Cold Milling w/overlay (Flexible), Earthwork (Borrow, Sub-excavation), Metal Barrier Installation, Structures (Culvert Extensions), Erosion Control Measures, Traffic Control (Phasing), Permanent Signing and Miscellaneous Construction. Description: Taos - US64 MM 242 - The New Mexico Department of Transportation began bridge rehabilitation work on the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The bridge work began on August 15th and is expected to be completed in November, weather permitting. During the project there will be an 80,000 pound weight limit restriction over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Travelers will encounter a temporary signal that has been placed at the bridge. The bridge roadway will be shut down to one lane. Plan your travel ahead of time and expect minor delays between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Fridays. There will be a reduced speed of 25 mph in the work zone and Double Fine Zones will be in enforced throughout the duration of the project. Description: The NMDOT and Kirkland Construction announce that road construction is ongoing on US 64/87 from mile marker 359 to 375. Construction activities can be expected at the following locations: Mile marker 365 to 375 hot mix operations can be anticipated along with shoulder grading of median areas.. Be cautious of machinery and haul trucks throughout this area. Haul trucks and machinery crossing at the following mile markers 363, 33, 375. Be especially cautious at these locations. Mile marker 359 to 361 bridge construction is ongoing as crews are constructing bridge approaches and departures. Traffic will be detoured onto new lanes near the end of the month as bridge demolition and construction of new bridges on existing roadway will commence. Description: I-25, ROADWORK from mile marker 343.2 to mile marker 348.4. NMDOT and MWI Incorporated have started to replace and install lighting and miscellaneous construction at exits 343, 345, and 347 in the Las Vegas area. The contractor will be utilizing traffic control as all work is on the should of the interstate, and on and off ramps into Las Vegas. MWI will begin work on exit 343 and work north to exits 344 and 345. Speed will be reduced to 40 mph in the construction zone for the safety of the employees. Title: New Mexico 419 northbound and southbound from at mile marker 0 to 100 miles East of at mile marker 47
Description: The NMDOT has determined the need to restrict speed to 20 mph on six (6) timber bridges on New Mexico 419 due to aging and damaged timber elements. Increased construction in the area on and around NM 419 has caused these bridges to get much heavier use than usual and the bridges are showing areas of light to heavy deterioration and cracking. NMDOT District 4 bridge crews are working on correcting bridge deficiencies. Until all these bridges deficiencies are corrected these speed restrictions will remain in place. The listing of bridges with locations is as follows: 1. Bridge No. 5299 at MP 7.17 2. Bridge No. 5968 at MP 8.36 3. Bridge No. 5966 at MP 10.48 4. Bridge No. 5965 at MP 13.06 5. Bridge No. 6257 at MP 17.52 6. Bridge No. 6453 at MP 27.48 NM 419 runs from Trementina to Mosquero in San Miguel and Harding counties in northeast New Mexico. Also, Bridge's No. 6453 and No. 6257on NM 419 at MP 17.04 were closed due to several cracked and busted girders. A detour has been constructed consisting of steel culverts installed by NMDOT District 4 maintenance crews. Description: Roadway Reconstruction will begin on NM 128, Tuesday, January 30, 2012. Traffic will be reduced to one lane between mm 2 and mm 3 and will be controlled by a Temporary Traffic Signal. One lane will be closed with the signal operating 24 hours a day, allowing traffic to travel in ONLY one direction at a time alternating between the Eastbound and Westbound traffic. A 10 foot WIDTH RESTRICTION is in affect during this reconstruction. Oversized and Wide Loads should seek an alternate route. Motorists should expect minor delays of up to 15 minutes and the speed limit is reduced to 30 mph within the work zone. Work is expected to be completed by April 15, 2012. State Grants Funds for Taos Marketing 08-09

The State of New Mexico Tourism Department has an annual cooperative grant program in which they award funds to qualified marketing entities in the state that apply with specific programs, are determined worthy during a review process, and can provide a 50/50 match for the grants awarded.

The 2008-09 award list, including amounts, is attached. It includes specific Taos awards this year of $51,000 for marketing.

This total includes $10,000 toward the Town of Taos marketing effort – the Town/Griffin & Associates applying for the first time this year in conjunction with the Taos Gallery Association and the Taos County Chamber of Commerce. The $51,000 also includes a $33,000 award – among the largest ever granted by the State – going to a consortium of the Taos County Chamber of Commerce and the Taos County Lodgers Association, who have previously applied and won for their great marketing program(s). In addition, this year the Museum Association of Taos received $5,000; the Harwood Museum Art Alliance was granted $3,000; Taos Ski Valley Chamber is down for $9,000; and the Taos County Film Commission for $1,000.

There are many other awards in Taos’ immediate North Central New Mexico region, including $7,000 to the Enchanted Circle Coop effort, of which the Town of Taos and Taos County Chamber area members. Our region has been granted approximately $124,000 in marketing funds by the state for 2008-09. Congratulations to all.

Taos Milagro Rotary Club Scholarship Fund

The Taos Milagro Rotary Club as presents their Second Annual Scholarship Fundraiser, the Taos Chile Challenge. The Challenge, part of the annual Taos Fall Festivals, will be held on September 28, 2008 to fund the scholarships that the club awards qualified Taos County high school graduates. Included in the event will be a morning golf tournament, a chile “cook-off”, featuring local professionals and amateurs and a “battle of the micro-breweries.”

On October 6, 2007 the club held its inaugural Taos Chile Challenge at the Taos Country Club. They raised enough money to continue funding the four-year fine arts scholarship, in addition to approximately $6,000 for 2008 scholarships. In May 2007 they awarded eight $500 scholarships and one $1,000 scholarship per year for four years to a student studying fine arts as a memorial to local artist Gary Williams, a fellow Rotarian. Their goal now is to establish a well-attended, annual regional event and to significantly increase their scholarship fund.

Memorial Weekend Transportation and Landfill Information – Town of Taos

Taos Landfill and Regular Chile Line Routes: Monday, May 26, the official holiday for Memorial Day, the Taos Landfill will not be open to the public (although crews work there managing our trash and pick up will still occur), and regular Chile Line Transportation routes will not be operating.

However, there will be a special loop route for the Chile Line all weekend in the Town of Taos downtown area --

In an effort to better circulate visitors and local shoppers around the Town of Taos historic district, the Town of Taos Chile Line Division, Public Works, is running a special ‘circular route’ all three days of this coming Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26, 2008, from 11:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. (see schedule below). Attached are two versions of the map for the special route.

Please assist in promoting this special service to members of the public who may use it so support for future special routes will continue to grow. Print and hand out this information this coming weekend to visitors to the historic district.

This activity is not only supported as part of the Town’s efforts to be more customer service/visitor friendly, but to also assist with circulation/parking issues restricted by current Town-wide construction projects. It is also part of an effort to assist with visitor/local shopper circulation between Town of Taos historic district merchants and Arts & Crafts Fairs in Kit Carson Park. A fair is scheduled this Memorial Day Weekend by Blue Sky Productions.

Goldstar Animals Helping People is a non-profit corporation dedicated to improving people's lives through a therapeutic program which includes services and activities promoting human/animal interaction.
