If you look at the left sidebar of the site, you'll see an iPhone screen shot of my just-released About Taos app. I want to work on it, add photos and videos, etc. But, it's a great app right now, and it's FREE.

Red River Fish Hatchery - Feed Huge Trout

I've been working for several days on a better way to take images, tag them with their latitude and longitude, and display them on the site, both in posts and on maps. Well, I think I've finally gotten it all together. From this post going forward, if an image tells you you can see it larger and map it, you'll be taken to Flickr.com when you click on it. There you'll see my larger versions, as well as links to Google Street maps, Satellite view, Google Earth, and even topological maps. The image location will be marked for you. Try it with the image in this post of the fish at the Red River Fish Hatchery, click on it.

Even better, as I take new photos, they're added to a great mapping site, and you can view maps by items of interest in the Taos area. As each map has the links to the others at the top, I'll just take you here to the Taos Arts Map as an example. All are easily accessed from the Maps tab at the top of every page. You can zoom, change map type, and mouse over the icons or the images for more information.

I'm trying to map every hotel, motel, b&b, business, building, restaurant, gallery, studio, horse trail, hiking trail and campground in the Enchanted Circle area. To do that, I need to take a photo at the site, but I don't mind, and it's free. I want this to be the best site on the Web for Taos area information. So, if you have a business or favorite location you want mapped, email it to me, and I'll move it up higher on the list. These maps will get more on them as quickly as I can take the photos.

It's all of the wonderful sights, activities and natural beauty right off the main road when you drive the Enchanted Circle. The top map will show you a photo, as well as allow you to link to the full image on Flickr and leave a comment about the place or image. The Google Earth map will help you with terrrain if you're planning a hike or other outdoor activity.

It's also going to be the peak week for leaf change at some elevations. So, I took a drive around the Enchanted Circle, taking high roads around Angel Fire and Red River. La Sombra Campground

In my series of videos of campgrounds in Northern New Mexico, there are three more in Taos Canyon, all within about four miles of each other. I took these videos Memorial Day weekend, and the two Forest Service Campgrounds were closed. However the commercial one was open, with a number of campers enjoying a beautiful weekend.

These campgrounds are an easy 20 minute or closer drive to Taos, and only about 25 minutes from Angel Fire. They fill up during the summer, so you'll want to plan ahead. With the excellent snowfall last winter, the Rio Fernando will be flowing quite well for the entire summer. Have a happy camping trip on the Enchanted Circle.

Valle Escondido Clubhouse

I've done other videos on Valle Escondido, but there's always something new to show. Memorial Day weekend there were golfers out, so I stopped in to visit the clubhouse. There are usually a few characters there, and I met Kevin Macpherson, an artist with a studio in Valle.

This video shows some of the homes in a drive-by, the clubhouse inside and out, the pool, and playground. Enjoy.

Elliot Barker Trail

Whether you're hiking in the summer or snowshoeing in the winter, Elliot Barker Trail is a great choice. It's also open to horses and bicycles, so you can enjoy this beautiful setting in a number of ways.

As you're coming down into Angel Fire, in a sharp curve in the road, is the trailhead and a small parking area. Please close the gate, and then enjoy taking one of the two trails. In the video below, I'll show you where that decision is made, and of course, I'll take you a little way up the EASY one.

Angel Fire Vietnam Veterans Memorial

As a Vietnam Veteran, I've been remiss in visiting this memorial in Angel Fire. I think I just don't like to rehash that time of my life. However, in driving the Enchanted Circle this Memorial Day weekend, I wanted to video the crowds. There were many bikers at the memorial.

As I was a helicopter door gunner, the Huey H Model was an interesting exhibit. Watch the video to get a short tour if you've never been here. If you have, you can refresh your memory or just people-watch.

Red River Bike Rally

In doing some videos around the Enchanted Circle in Northern New Mexico this weekend, I drove (very slowly) through Red River. There was just enough room for the Jeep between the rows of motorcycles lining the entire main street through town.

Tents with Barbecue, beer, leather goods and more were lining the sidewalks. It's a really big scene every year on Memorial Day. I didn't try to stop, but merely took the video through the windows. I would have had to hike to get into town from the nearest parking spot.

Elizabethtown Museum

In a trip around the Enchanted Circle on the Sunday before Memorial Day, I finally took the turn at the sign for the Elizabethtown Museum. It's between Eagle Nest and Red River. Though I had seen the sign at the highway many times, this was my first look at the museum. It will definitely not be my last.

There is so much in the way of antiques, old photographs and memorabilia, that antique buffs could spend hours in this faux town collage of buildings. Thanks to Ken Ball for showing me around, and I hope he gets many visitors, as it looks like it can get a little lonely at the end of the road. Though, the views are awesome.
