Deadline Rapidly Approaching!!
Love to cook? Love to write? Love to see your work published? Submit to our "Storied Recipes" fundraising cookbook project. (Deadline June 1, 2012).

If you are a member or friend of SOMOS, “the literary heart of Taos” (and who isn’t?), who likes to both write and cook (and who among us doesn’t?), we invite you to submit a favorite, time-tested recipe, along with a short-short (true), well crafted related story, for consideration for our forthcoming, first-of-its-kind, literary-culinary fundraising cookbook, Storied Recipes.

Community fundraising cookbooks are nothing new, but our approach to this, our first fundraising cookbook, will be new. Ours will have a special SOMOS literary twist – not just a nice collection of worthwhile recipes, but also the meaningful (funny, charming, or poignant) stories that make those recipes come alive. To stir your creative juices, here are some of the chapter headings we have in mind: Just for Starters, Power Breakfasts, Ladies Who Lunch, Barbecue Basics, Fresh from the Garden (or Farmers Market), Potluck Specials, Fish Tales, Tea Party Treats, Après Ski Eats, Unexpected Guests, Romantic Dinners, Memorable Celebrations, and Sweet Endings.

As we envision it, Storied Recipes will be a fun bouillabaisse of offerings from good writers who are also good cooks (or who know good cooks). We see an 8-1/2-inch square, slim volume with one recipe-and-story-combination per page. For this reason, it is essential that each submitter follow the guidelines closely, crafting his or her story to just 200 words (short, indeed!) and the entire submission to 400 words (see sample below). Please download the Word document submission form, a simple text document or a PDF, complete it then email or snail-mail as indicated on the form.

Taos, NM has always enjoyed a reputation as a great place to recreate and own a vacation home, enjoy the arts and vacation. Vacation homes have always been a large portion of Taos real estate market sales, and being right in the middle of the Carson National Forest and BLM land has been a draw for thousands of vacation home buyers.

Recent national articles have touted a resurgence of vacation home sales around the country, especially in upscale markets. While I can't speak to the Santa Fe market, the Taos real estate market is still in the doldrums, with few buyers in the area. However, we're entering the busy summer tourist season, and I hope to see a few more buyers this year, as last year was a pretty lean real estate year.

Taos came late to the national fall-off in sales that began in 2007, so I think we'll be a little behind in this apparent trend to returning vacation home buyers. There is good market news for other ski areas, such as those in Colorado and Idaho. While many of my past vacation home buyers expressed an interest in using a property management company to manage their home as a vacation rental, it usually ends up moving to the bottom of their list, as they're enjoying it too much. While it is a second home, a Taos real estate property has always proved to be a good investment, and resort realty in general has fared well in the past.

Northern New Mexico is an annual destination for many, and those visitors end up making up the bulk of our vacation home buyers. Visit the Taos area, check out our real estate market and let Gallery Realty of Taos be your real estate company and buyer only agent. A Taos vacation rental is a great investment, but you'll probably end up keeping it all to yourself.
