Lecture / book signing on the life of Kateri Tekakwitha by Taos artist and author Giovanna Paponetti, who witnessed the canonization of this Native American Saint at the Vatican in Rome this past October.

A celebration of the life of Peter Douthit, New Mexico’s “Don King of Poetry”
and founder of the Taos Poetry Circus, will take place:
 
7pm Monday, Dec 3, 2012, at
Low Spirits Club
2823 2ND ST. NW, just north of Menaul
Albuquerque
Admission is free. (21 plus.)
Best known as Peter Rabbit, Douthit was a for-real hippy.
He was an original member of the renowned Drop City commune in Trinidad, CO,
and famous for bringing the great names in American poetry to perform at various venues in New Mexico.
 
In an interview before his death, Rabbit said he wanted to be remembered as “a good poet.”
He died October 27th after a long bout with liver cancer.
The Celebration will be attended by numerous New Mexico poets with whom Rabbit worked over the years.
Poems by Jimmy Santiago Baca, John Trudell, Bob Holman and other well known American poets will be read.
 
Attending poets will include NM Centennial Poet Levi Romero, Albuquerque Poet Laureate Hakim Bellamy
and Taos Poetry Circus co-founder Anne McNaughton, along with Gary Brower, Priscilla Baca y Candelaria, Larry Goodell,
Amalio Madueño, Bill Nevins, Vanessa Boyd, Carlos Contreras and others.
 
Films clips and documentaries of the life and times of Peter Rabbit will be shown.
 
Music will be provided by Los Unusual Suspects blues band with Richard Malcolm, 
songwriter Vanessa Boyd and Los Notorious Green Suede Shoes.
 
There will be a cash bar. (21 plus)
Those who would like to make a 5 minute or less celebratory presentation at the event

Call for Submissions — The Rag   

The Rag, an Albuquerque monthly poetry broadside which has been distributed free at coffee houses and bookstores throughout the city for over 14 years, is seeking submissions. Poems should be no longer than thirty lines including stanza breaks. Previously published poems OK. Email submissions to theragabq@gmail.com (note new email address) or send to Karin Bradberry, 11322 Campo del Sol NE, Albuquerque, NM 87123. Authors receive 2 copies of The Rag as payment for published poems. Subscriptions also available for $15/yr. Send check to Karin Bradberry at the same address.

About the Editors:
Karin Bradberry is an Albuquerque poet, teacher and visual artist. She has served as co-editor/publisher of The Rag since 2008. She has won numerous poetry prizes (SouthWest Writers, Writer’s Digest, NMSPS, NFSPS, Prescott Writers), and been published in local and national magazines and several anthologies (Central Avenue, Writer’s Digest, Sage Trail, The Rag, Harwood, Adobe Walls, Pudding Magazine, Along the Rio Grande, Fixed and Free).
Elaine Schwartz,  is co-founder of the Albuquerque Chapter of Poets Against War and co-editor of The Rag. Her poetry, best described as a tapestry of place and political imagination, has appeared in numerous publications including An Anthology of Monterey Bay Poets, Santa Fe Literary Review, Harwood Anthology, Malpais Review, Poetica and The Rag.
