ISEA "Taos Day" – September 27 The 18th Annual International Symposium on Electronic Art takes place in Albuquerque this year from September 19-24. The symposium draws avante garde electronic artists from around the world. The event is offering a Field Trip excursion to Taos on September 27. "Taos Day" will include demonstrations and exhibitions at UNM, KTAO, the Earthship Community, the Hand of Man sculpture mentioned below, and numerous art studios and galleries around town. The Taos events are indicative of this year's symposium's theme "Machine Wilderness," referencing New Mexico as a region of rapid growth and technology within vast expanses of open land, and presenting visions of a more humane interaction between technology and wilderness in which "machines" can take many forms to support life on Earth. "The Hand of Man" moving sculpture by Christian Ristow, September 27 thru 30, Kit Carson Park The Hand of Man is an interactive kinetic sculpture that you can operate. You will be able to work with the artist and crew to slip your hand into the sculpture's operation glove – a system that enables the giant sculpture to mimic the movements of your own hand. You can pick up cars that will be part of the exhibit, lift them 25 feet up, turn them about, and drop them to the ground! The Hand was designed and built by Ristow, a renowned artist in the field of animatronics. Ristow has been living and working in Taos since 2005, and built The Hand in 2008. Christian's artistic career includes building elaborate large-scale robotic work and performances in front of audiences across the US, as well as robotic special effects for a number of movies (Spiderman, War of the Worlds, Cowboys and Aliens, and many others). Be part of this sculpture performance on Thursday, September 27, 11 am to 9 pm. There will be a special presentation by Ristow and his crew to ISEA attendees at 4 pm on Thursday. A second day of sculpture performance is scheduled for Saturday, September 29, 11am to 9 pm.
