This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

 

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

  • Eagle Nest LakeJune 24, James Chick of Espanola caught a 26-inch northern pike. He was using a small silver Kastmaster.
  • Abiquiu Lake: June 27, Amy Anderson of Los Alamos caught a 27-inch, 7-pound walleye. She was trolling a crank bait at the north end of the lake.
  • Cochiti Lake: June 28, Abel Baca Jr. of Albuquerque caught and released a 32-inch, 7-pound northern pike. He was trolling a crank bait.
  • Ute LakeJune 28, Kenny Smith of Portales caught a 6.23-pound largemouth bass. He was fishing in less than 2 feet of water.
  • Lake Van: July 2, Josh Rivas of Roswell caught a 26-inch channel catfish. He was using shrimp.
  • Bluewater Lake: July 2, Mike Case of Farmington caught a 42-inch musky. He was trolling a crank bait.

The following came in too late for last week’s report but we thought they were definitely worth mentioning:

  • San Gregorio: June 23, Jordan Baldonado of Rio Rancho caught a 20.5-inch rainbow trout. He was using a wooly bugger.

Northeast

 

Cabresto LakeThe lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt. 
Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, jigs and worms for trout and perch.
Cimarron River: Hot spot for trout: Fishing was great this past week for anglers using stone flies, elk hair caddis, tricos, BWOs and spinners. Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 55 cfs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit lakes was fair using Pistol Petes and Power Bait.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait and homemade dough bait for trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing the early morning and late evening hours. We had no reports on other species. Due to low water conditions, only small boats, kayaks and canoes can be launched.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, grubs, bottom-bouncer nightcrawler combinations, minnows and sassy shad for walleye. Fishing was fair using crank baits, sassy shad and grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using buzz baits, Pop Rs, tubes, creature baits, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, homemade dough baits and nightcrawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.The steep north side boat ramp is open.
Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms and elk hair caddis.
Eagle Nest Lake: Hot spot for perch: Fishing was very good using worms and jigs for perch. Anglers were doing best from boats. Fishing was good using Kastmasters, Krocadile spoons and Johnson spoons for northern pike. Fishing was fair trolling Panther Martins, Z Rays, double whammies and Pistol Petes for trout and kokanee.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Hot spot for trout: Fishing was very good using cheese, salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout.
Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.
Monastery LakeTrout fishing was fair using garlic cheese, Power Bait and Pistol Petes.
Morphy Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, homemade dough baits, Pistol Petes and cheese.
Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 41 cfs. Trout fishing was good using tan elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, bead-head hares ears, worms and salmon eggs.
Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 57 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, red copper John Barrs, small spinners and salmon eggs.
Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was good using parachute adams, elk hair caddis, yellow humpys and PMDs. Through the Valle Vidal, trout fishing was excellent using PMDs, red and yellow humpys and Yeager 409s and tan and olive caddis. The Costilla and Comanche Creek fished very well opening weekend.
Rio Grande: The water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 233 cfs. Trout fishing was good using spinners, salmon eggs, hoppers, bead-head hares ears, elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs and orange and yellow stimulators. Fishing for northern pike and smallmouth bass was slow.
Rio Hondo: Water flow near Valdez on Monday was 22 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using elk hair caddis and mayfly nymphs in the morning and evening hours.
Santa BarbaraTrout fishing was fair using parachute adams, elk hair caddis and yellow humpys.
Springer Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species. The water was low and quite murky.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, cheese, corn and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and stink bait for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing in the early morning hours. We had no reports on other species.
Ute Lake: Fishing was good using buzz baits, crank baits and a variety of soft plastics for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. The best crank bait fishing was working them shallow on rocky points. Fishing was fair to good using minnows, nightcrawlers and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits and casting grubs and top water lures for white bass. Fishing was good using stink bait for catfish. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using white curly tail grubs, crank baits and nightcrawlers for walleye and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using nightcrawlers for bluegill. Fishing was fair using chicken liver and nightcrawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.
Animas RiverAs of Monday morning flow near Cedar Hill was 345 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using spinners, wooly worms, egg patterns, San Juan worms and salmon eggs.
Bluewater Lake: Hot spot for tiger musky: Fishing was very good using swim baits, jerk baits, crank baits and large spoons for tiger musky. Anglers reported good fishing from boats and from the bank. Most of the musky were in the 25- to 35-inch range. The surface water temp was in the mid 60s. Recommend releasing short fish as soon as possible to keep them healthy and a big catch for the future.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 987 cfs and 969 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado and below Abiquiu was slow with a few fish taken on salmon eggs and nightcrawlers. The water was quite murky.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was good using spinners, jigs and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using topwater lures, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using homemade dough bait, hot dogs and liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and top water lures for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The water level continues to drop.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, cheese, light colored Power Bait, olive Pistol Petes and wooly buggers for trout. Anglers did best fishing early and late in the day.
Heron Lake: Fishing for kokanee was good. The fish were taken on Cripplures, Z Rays and spinners tipped with white corn and trolled at a depth of 18 to 35 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 5.7 cfs. Trout fishing on the Cebolla was good using worms, copper John Barrs and San Juan worms. On the East Fork fishing was fair using elk hair caddis, hoppers and salmon eggs. Anglers interested in fishing the San Antonio or East Fork on the Valles Caldera should go to www.vallescaldera.gov.
Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week. This is a special trout water open to anglers age 14 years or under, 65 years and older, handicapped anglers or up to 2 parents/guardians in direct supervision of a child or children age 14 years or younger who is fishing. This water was formerly known as Burn’s Canyon Lake.
Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow for all species.
Manzano Lake: Trout fishing was slow.
McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using topwater lures and crank baits on the main lake for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers fishing in the coves did better using tubes. Fishing was fair to good using minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was fair using cut bait and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair trolling red Arnies, Z Rays and double whammies tipped with corn for kokanee. We had no reports on other species.
Ramah Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Gregorio Lake: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, hoppers, Power Bait and salmon eggs. 
San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 1,000 cfs. Flows may remain close to 1,000 cfs for several days to provide sufficient flow for endangered species downstream. Trout fishing in the Quality Waters was good using gray and chocolate midges, red hots, egg patterns and leeches. PMDs and some baetis were coming off in the afternoon hours. Fishing through the bait waters was good using nightcrawlers, jerk baits, wooly buggers, wooly worms and copper John Barrs. A few trout were also taken on Power Bait.
Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, Power Bait, garlic cheese and corn salmon egg combinations. We had no reports on other species.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: This water is open to fishing for youth under the age of 12 and
an excellent place to take youngsters and get them interested in fishing. The pond is well stocked to offer youngsters a great fishing experience.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using hot dogs, worms and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Catch-and-Release Pond was slow.

 

Southwest

 

Bear Canyon: Fishing was fair using chicken liver, stink bait and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, sassy shad, curly tail grubs and spinner minnow combinations for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and bottom-bouncer nightcrawler combinations for walleye. We had no reports on other species.
Elephant Butte: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, curly tail grubs and sassy shad for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and spinner minnow combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair using Pop Rs, jerk baits, crank baits, tubes, crawdad imitations and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using stink baits, chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Surface temps on the main lake were in the mid to upper 70s. The Monticello and Dam Site boat ramps remain closed.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using stink bait, hot dogs and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 22 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. For updated information regarding closures in the area call 575-533-6231.
Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, cheese and spinners for trout. Fishing for catfish was fair to good using stink bait, worms and liver.
Percha Dam: Fishing was good using grubs and minnows for walleye. Fishing was good using cut bait, minnows and liver for catfish.
Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 1,950 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was fair using small spoons and white grubs for white bass and a few walleye. Fishing was fair using stink bait and liver for catfish. Fishing below Caballo was good using minnows, crank baits, spoons and grubs for walleye and white bass.
Snow Lake: The Snow Lake/Dipping Vat Campground has been closed until further notice due to the Whitewater/Baldy Fire Complex. For more information call 575-533-6231.

 

Southeast

 

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bonito Lake: The lake and surrounding area remain closed to fishing due to the recent fire in the area. Check for updates in later reports.
Bosque Redondo: Fishing was fair using nightcrawlers and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, cheese, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs.
Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week but the lake was recently stocked with channel catfish.
Lake Van: Fishing was fair to good using liver, shrimp and Catfish Charlie’s wildcat cheese bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Oasis Park LakeFishing was slow for all species. 
Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 137 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
Perch Lake: Fishing was slow.
Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 4.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was good using minnows, spinner-nightcrawler rigs, crank baits, grubs and sassy shad for walleye. Fishing was good using stink bait and homemade dough bait for catfish. A few crappie were taken by anglers using minnows and jigs. The boat ramp is open. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The only boat ramp accessible at this time is the east-side ramp.
