Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Return of Blue Lake
In 1970, President Richard M. Nixon signed into law the act that restored Taos Pueblo lands  to the Taos Pueblo, safeguarding the interest and welfare of the Pueblo and its water supply as well as natural and domestic resources, and the locale of social and millennium-old traditional culture.

Ultimately, this enactment set a precedent for self-determination for all American Indian people.  President Nixon stated, “this is a bill that represents justice, because in 1906 an injustice was done in which land involved in this bill, 48,000 acres, was taken from the Indians involved, the Taos Pueblo Indians. The Congress of the United States now returns that land to whom it belongs… I can’t think of anything more appropriate or any action that could make me more proud as President of the United States.”

Taos Pueblo, will honor the 40th Anniversary of the return of its Blue Lake and surrounding lands. The month of September’s theme for this momentous celebration has been appropriately titled “Blue Lake – A Symbol of Cultural Strength and Determination.” The commemoration will begin on Friday, September 17th with an opening mass at St. Jerome Church on Taos Pueblo, and an evening reception.   The highlight events will take place on Saturday, September 18th with activities scheduled throughout the day in the plaza of Taos Pueblo’s historic village. Taos Fall Arts Poster Artist Chosen

My Old Adobe with Red Roof, Inger Jerby

As eagerly anticipated as the event itself, the collectible poster for the Annual Taos Fall Arts Festival has been chosen. This year’s winner is  “My Old Adobe with Red Roof” by local, award winning artist, Inger Jirby.  This is the first time in the festival’s 36 year history that the piece chosen was selected by a committee of local artists’ submissions. In the past, the image was always that from a deceased artist.  When asked for her reaction to having her image chosen Jerby’s response was, “I am very happy and feel honored to be chosen as the poster artist for the Fall Arts Festival.  As a Taos painter this is a wonderful opportunity to show my work at this exciting event and represent the town that I love.”

The 2010 Annual Taos Fall Arts Festival will take place at Civic Plaza Drive, from September 24th-October 11th.  As always, the focus of the festival is an annual exhibition of art created by local artists and to benefit the Fall Arts organization and its selected local charities. Visit www.taosfallartsfestival.com or www.jirby.com
