GIFT SHOP

Trunk Show
The February Shop & Learn Trunk Show at the Harwood Museum of Art features work by metalsmith Deborah Chuck.

The public is invited to a free reception on Saturday, February 6, from noon to 2 pm to meet the artist and see how she transforms plain silver and copper into one-of-a-kind treasures.

"My work is guided by my relationship to fire and metal," Chuck says. "The metal takes on a life of its own and I let it go where it wants. As a result, my work has a raw and organic look. I fuse multiple metals together in designs that shift in color and shadows as they are worn."

For more information contact Shop Manager, Carolyn Hinske, at 575-758-9826 or chinske@unm.edu.

Beginning Friday, February 12, from noon to 1 pm, the Harwood Museum of Art presents the first in a series of lunchtime lectures on printmaking with noted collector, philanthropist and lecturer, Dr. Robert Bell. This first lecture will shed light on the history of printmaking focusing on works by Durer, Whistler, Picasso and Chagall. With the aide of magnification loops, participants can examine the techniques to be discussed.

"My lectures look at techniques, examine historical eras, and provide an opportunity to share my passion of this art form with other print lovers," Bell says.

Due to class size, advanced registration is required. This program is free to Harwood Museum Alliance members. $8 to non-members. To reserve your space for the February 12th noon presentation please call 575 758-9826 or email chinske@unm.edu. The series will continue monthly through May.

EXPANSION UPDATE

Harwood Expansion

What a difference a month makes!  90% of the concrete has been poured for the Harwood's 10,000 square foot expansion and all of the footings for the masonry walls have been completed. This means that contour lines defining distinct rooms are visible! Very exciting!  During the next month we'll be laying slab core flooring planks and erecting steel.  "Going great," says Flintco Superintendent Doc Rand. "Just fighting weather a little bit." Click on the YouTube logo for an updated video of our ever-changing construction site.

VISITOR RESEARCH STUDY

In February, the Harwood will launch a visitor feedback program. And we want you!  We'll ask for two hours of your time and reward you with two complimentary passes for a return visit. You'll visit the Harwood for forty-five minutes and then discuss your experience with us. That's it!  Your insights will help us see the Harwood through our visitors' eyes and improve the experience of future visitors.  If you're interested, please contact Harwood Director Susan Longhenry at susanl@unm.edu.

A Little Off the Top, Dwayne Wilcox

Dwayne Wilcox: Skipped the Light Fandango features 21 works made with pencil and colored pencil on antique ledger paper. Mr. Wilcox's expression gives us a glimpse into the creative musings of a contemporary Native American artist. Using biting satire while addressing long-standing issues of social justice, Wilcox creates work that is thought provoking and darkly comic.

WHAT IS THE HARWOOD ALLIANCE?

The Harwood Museum Alliance is the membership organization of the Harwood Museum of Art. When you join the Alliance, you become a member of the Museum. It is a separate 501c3, set up to receive membership dues and donations. With these funds, the Alliance is able to donate approximately $12,000 every year to the Harwood Museum of Art to be used as the Director deems necessary; to make funds available for membership-sponsored events; and to contribute $5,000 each year toward a purchase of art for the Museum.

The Alliance has a board made up of members of the community who meet once a month to review and plan Alliance activities. The Alliance sponsors festive member-only exhibition openings, periodic fundraising events and, beginning last fall, special day trips. The major support for the next two exhibitions - Rebecca Salsbury James:  Paintings and Colchas and Dwayne Wilcox: Skipped the Light Fandango, February 20 through June 6, 2010 comes from the Alliance.

Currently, we have a matching gift for new memberships.  For every new membership, a donor will match with $25 up to a total of $2,500 for the year. (That works out to 100 new memberships a year.) Please think of this as a warm invitation to become an Alliance member and join us in our support of Taos' most dynamic and respected museum.  If you are already a member, we thank you!  Consider gifting a membership to help us reach our donor match.  Click here to join or gift a membership!
