THE SOMOS 2010 WINTER WRITERS SERIES CONTINUES........

                         FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2010!
7 PM @ The Mabel Dodge Luhan House
240 Morada Lane, Taos
Two fun and fabulous short story writers share their work!

David Perez - writer, editor, consultant and actor will read from one of his short stories, "New Life and Alien Life: A Journey Begins."  David is locally known for his previous readings from his memoir-in-progress, "WOW", about growing up in the South Bronx, his many roles as an actor, and his editorial consultant work with accomplished writers.

Monique Parker - teaches English composition, creative writing, and yoga therapy at UNM - Taos, where is also serves as the Yoga Program Coordinator.  Her Yoga of Writing workshops were recently featured in Writer's Digest and Poets & Writers magazines.  She will read from a short story, "The Mantra Business" from her collection-in-progress, "Mating on the Web: Internet Stories."

Do you like to write?  Enjoy kids?  Have an hour or two every other week to spare?

Maybe you should think about mentoring a young Taos writer!

Already seventeen years strong, the Young Writers’ Mentorship Program is one of the most cherished SOMOS offerings in the Taos community.  Hundreds of middle- and high-school-aged students have been discovering and developing the craft of writing in a non-institutional format, meeting with adult mentors one-on-one after school, once every week (or two) from February through April.

It’s a fun, free way to make a difference in the life of a Taos kid.  And it’s incredibly rewarding for the adult, as well. If you’re new to the experience, you may be surprised to find how much give-and-take there is in the process.

Mentorship offers an opportunity to share a common joy with a young person, to learn from one another, and to explore new avenues of interest – all the while forging a friendship and feeding the creative spark that makes your own work sing.

If you like writing songs, we’ll match you up with a kid who shares that interest.  Crazy about science fiction?  Explore alternate universes with a young person into the same kind of writing.  Poets, nature writers, journal-keepers – there’s room for everyone who’s willing to set aside a little time and share it with a young Taos writer.  And we’ll support you both with mentor training, fun workshops, ideas, check-ins, and other resources.

This year, Summer Wood will be running the program with the help of Rita O’Connell, a recent college grad with a big voice (if you get the chance to hear her sing, don’t miss it!) and a lot of great ideas for making the program even more engaging and relevant.  Rita’s a writer with a thriving creative life, and we’re thrilled to have her input to this year’s program.

We’ll be going into area schools to recruit students starting the first of February, and we’d love to have a full roster of mentors by then.  You can learn more about this program, which runs February through the end of April, by visiting www.somostaos.net and clicking on “Youth Mentorship Program.”  And we’d be happy to answer any other questions you might have.  You may leave a message for Summer or for Rita at SOMOS, 758-0081, and one of us will call you back – or send an email to somos@somostaos.org with “mentorship” as the subject line, and we’ll reach you that way.

SOMOS
BOOK CLUB
Our next book is “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” by Alexandra Fuller.  In her memoir Fuller “remembers her African childhood with candor and sensitivity.  Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate.  Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating.  In wry and and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.”  Check out her other book, “Scribbling the Cat”.
Join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30 PM at the SOMOS Office!

SOMOS HAS A BLOG!!!! www.somostaos.org

With the brilliant technical and creative help of new member Jim Kimmons, Hannah Rappaport is creating a new SOMOS BLOG.  This site will eventually replace our current website.  It will contain all the present information with the addition of some exciting interactive features.  Members will have the opportunity to submit posts such as poems, short stories, links to their own websites, and more.  There will be the opportunity to communicate with other members, keep up with SOMOS activities, find volunteer opportunities, and create new opportunities member to member.

Through the WordPress Blog we will be able to save paper and postal expense by sending out our Muse News online.  Please notify the office if you do not wish to switch to paperless newsletters as in the very near future we will be making the switch.  For members who adamantly refuse the current technology we will continue to snail mail you paper.  But reducing the costs of this mailing is becoming necessary in this economic climate.

SOMOS began as a venue for local authors to read their works to one another.  This new Blog will carry the muse into the current cyberspace century (21st for those who have lost count).  Stay tuned for this new format, coming soon.
