2) 10/7 Planning & Zoning Meeting, agenda attached.
3) Travel Guide New Mexico will feature Taos this Saturday, 10/10/09 at 10 a.m. on KRQE (Channel 13), and in the Las Cruces/El Paso market at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, 10/11/09, on KTSM News Channel 9.
4) Reminder: Thursday, October 15, 4-7 p.m., the Taos community is invited to a free Taos Summer of Love concluding reception at Antonio’s Restaurant, 4-7 p.m. The over 350 community participants in the Taos Summer of Love effort will be thanked, a report about the Summer of Love’s promotional impacts will be issued, and the first deadlines for participation in the 2010 campaign will be discussed, including how to be on the new micro-site/calendar, how to submit content for the national/international free media launch in January 2009, etc. The Taos 2010 theme, “Return to Sacred Places”* will be a year-long effort (not just summer). As was the case last year, the Town of Taos, its consultant Joanie Griffin, and all of our marketing partners will be providing the direct marketing for all the various events, activities, packages and experiences tourism-orientated entities in the Taos area organize around the 2010 theme. This marketing team will not underwrite the events or activities themselves, but will spend their time, energy and resources on promoting what is scheduled by community entities. If you have questions about any of this, or still need to discuss how it works, please contact Joan Griffin, 505-764-4444, ext. 222 or this office. If you cannot attend but would like the report, and would like to be involved in the 2010 activities, contact Joanie Griffin at jgriffin@griffinassoc.com.
*The Return to Sacred Places theme for Taos is a broad one, and directly speaks to what Taos is about for most of us. To a great extent one’s intent is what makes a place sacred. For visitors as well as Taoseños it might mean a favorite hiking trail, our glorious skies and sunsets, or that inner creative side of yourself you get to explore when you’re in a Taos art, music, writing, cooking or other type of workshop. It obviously also includes our special historic and tri-cultural destinations such as Taos Pueblo, Taos Plaza, and the acequia system, our museums and the Viet Nam Veterans National Memorial, as well as literal sacred locations such as our moradas, churches, temples, etc. The Taos Historic Walking Tour brochure, recently redone, captures many of the ‘sacred places’ in our downtown historic district. It is distributed free to visitors at the Taos Visitor Center, and is extremely popular. Click the following link for a PDF of this brochure, and feel free to add it to the tourism content on your own web site, http://www.taosgov.com/pr/documents/HistoricTaosWalkingTour09.pdf.
The 2010 Taos Vacation Guide, produced by the Taos County Lodgers Association in conjunction with the overall marketing team’s input, provides an excellent articulation of the “Return to Sacred Places” theme through copy as well as photographic images. A PDF of this guide may be viewed here, http://www.taosvacationguide.com/files/print_guide.pdf. Starting November 1, 2009, these guides will be available in hard-copy form at the Taos Visitor Center.
In addition, the Taos tourism team is working on thematic descriptions that will be used on web sites, in media materials, etc. – and shared. Here is one brief version to assist you with seeing how you might fit into the 2010 theme with an event, activity, write up or other involvement:
“Taos, New Mexico, has always been unique -- a visitor destination for over 1,000 years. Explorers, mountain men, artists, outdoor enthusiasts, international celebrities, and everyone in between who's looking to reinvent the modern day has found Taos’ unique ambiance and offerings irresistible.
Particularly today, as we all attempt to adjust to economic and societal challenges, places like Taos are of even greater value. They resonate with us as we examine what is important in our lives – as we focus on revisiting life’s priorities.
Taos is a destination where travelers can refresh relationships and remember how to relax. It is a place where visitors are invited to explore ancient southwest architecture and history, authentic artistic culture, wild outdoor beauty – and inner life surprises. All this, wrapped around by world-class food, shopping, recreation, workshops, entertainment, and accommodations.
Taos is a place where all of us can revisit and honor those places that are sacred to us – ancient and new, man-made and natural, inner and outdoor.
During 2010, Taos invites travelers to celebrate this “Return to Sacred Places” with us.
Read on (or, click through this site) for an overview of the types of sacred places Taos invites you to explore.”
