Town of Taos News Brief 9/29/09, 4 items

1) The Town of Taos is alerting the community as to maintenance activities that will be performed at the Taos Regional Airport during October.  Runway crack sealing is scheduled to be performed on Runway 04/22 on October 6 and 7.  Marking (tracing) of the aprons and partial parallel taxiway is scheduled for October 15 and 16.  Of course this precise schedule is dependent on weather.  Should you have questions/concerns, please email Assistant Town of Taos Manager Abigail Adame who is interim airport manager while Airport Director Mark Fratrick is away on military duty in Afghanistan.

On another Taos Regional Airport issue, on September 20th the Taos News reported about funds, from the Feds, that are being spent on ‘mapping’ at the Airport.  Some members of the Taos community were concerned that this mapping somehow was prematurely forwarding the agenda of the cross-winds runway, and alleged airport ‘expansion’.  That is incorrect as reported.  This mapping is required for the existing airport.  The Taos News has been asked to run a clarification and a formal letter has been sent to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local, concerned Taos citizens.  Again, if you want more detail, contact Abigail Adame, aadame@taosgov.com, 751-2005.

2) Town of Taos Request for a Youth Representative to “sit” on the Council.  The Town is requesting interested high school age applicants to send in letters (or emails) of application, including resume/biographical information, to Tamara Romero in the Mayor’s office, tromero@taosgov.com, 751-2003, should they be interested in being the Town of Taos Youth Representative on the Council.  Mayor Darren Cordova and his Council would very much like a “voice of Taos youth” to be actively represented, and participate.  Mailed applications may be sent to Town Hall, attn: Tamara Romero, 400 Camino de la Placita, Taos, NM 87571.  Deadline is October 16, 2009.

3)The North Central Regional Transit District’s (NCRTD) “Blue Buses” will not be running October 9 and 12 – October marks the second anniversary of this weekday transit service in North Central New Mexico.  These buses will not be in service due to the anniversary celebration – including the ground breaking of the NCRTD’s new facility in Espanola, and Employee Training held on Friday, October 9th and in observance of the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, October 12.  Regular scheduled bus services throughout north central New Mexico in Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Taos Counties will resume on Tuesday, October 13.  For further info., contact Christina Córdova, Dir. of Marketing and Communications, 505-438-3257.  Also note that Thursday through Sunday you can take the nonstop Taos Express to Santa Fe, sponsored by the Town of Taos, with connections to other transit – including the NM Rail Runner to points south.  See details on www.TaosExpress.com.

4) Corrected information:  Town of Taos 13th Annual Children's Halloween Party and Haunted House, October 24.  The Town of Taos Youth & Family Center will host the 13th Annual Children’s Halloween Party on Sat., Oct. 24, from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Taos Convention Center, Civic Plaza Dr. The party will provide the children of Taos with a fun, safe and supervised event. Everyone is welcome and admission to the party is free.  The first 750 children will receive a free Halloween bag filled with treats and goodies.  There will also be various pay-to-play carnival games with prizes for participating children.  Proceeds will benefit youth and community groups throughout Taos.  The party’s free costume contest includes four age categories.  Children ages 2 and under will be judged at 2:30 p.m., 3-5 year olds at 3:15 p.m., 6-8 year olds at 4 p.m., and 9-12 year olds at 4:45 .m.  Prizes will be awarded to the child with the Most Original Costume, Funniest Costume and Best Costume.

As an adjunct to this year’s party, don’t forget the Terror on Civic Plaza haunted house!  During the party on the 10/24, the haunted house will be made appropriate for younger children and open at a cost of $4 per person.  The Taos High School Cheerleaders will help out this year.

Then later on 10/24, from 7-10 p.m., the “Terror On Civic Plaza Drive” haunted house will have its extra spooky hours for older youth.  On this night everyone is welcome, but evening haunted house may not be appropriate for children under age 12.  Adventurers brave enough to enter the haunted house that night will go on a tour of one of the most chilling and creepy experiences in Taos.  The Taos High School Cheerleaders will again be assisting.  Cost is $4 per person.  For more information call Judy Esquibel at Youth & Family, 758-4160.

And what about the haunted house on Halloween, Oct. 31?  From 7-10 p.m., DMC Broadcasting will be underwriting the “Terror on Civic Plaza Drive” haunted house on Halloween itself, with Taos High School Cheerleader volunteers.  Go to the station’s web sites or listen to one of DMC’s four stations for more information.  KXMT, 99.1 FM, www.kxmt.com, KKIT 95.9 FM www.kkitthemountain.com, KKTC 100.7 FM www.kktctruecountry.com, and KVOT 1340 AM www.1340kvot.com.
