Town of Taos News Brief 7/6/09 – Important Weekend Information
1) Taos Events This Weekend, July 10-12: Taos Pueblo Pow Wow , www.taospueblopowwow.com and the Taos Mountain Motorcycle Rally http://www.themountainwaymag.com/taosmountainmotorcyclerally/index.php are both scheduled for this coming weekend. Please be aware that traffic in the historic district will inevitably be delayed given the volume of attendees anticipated.
Those concerned about this are advised to avoid Paseo del Pueblo Norte (Highway 64) between the Kachina Lodge (headquarters for the motorcycle rally) and Civic Plaza Drive (Kit Carson Park is where a lot of rally events will be hosted). Highway 64 at Duane will also have a temporary stop sign installed given that both sides of this section of road will be the motorcycle parking/staging area for participants entering rally design competitions and participating in other events. Town of Taos safety/logistics teams will be headquartered for the weekend in a section of one of the parking lots near the Taos Center for the Arts’. More general logistics information may be obtained from Town of Taos Police Chief Daron Syling, ksyling@taosgov.com.
Taos Pueblo Pow Wow attendees have access north of Town, near the Overland Sheepskin Company (Ben Romero Rd.) – click the following link for a map, http://www.taospueblopowwow.com/tppwmap.html. NOTE: Taos Pueblo still needs a couple more lodging nights this coming weekend for law enforcement personnel who will be assisting with the Pow Wow. Those of you who have contributed – thank you! If you think you might have a room to contribute, please contact the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow Committee, 575-741-0181 or info@taospueblopowwow.com.
Chile Line Route: This coming weekend, as well as Taos Fiestas Weekend, July 24-26, http://fiestasdetaos.com/, the Chile Line north and south-bound routes will function in a loop configuration, not going through the Town of Taos downtown Historic District. This is to assist with on-time running of the $1-round-trip-buses during heavy traffic conditions, as well as accommodate maximum ease for riders. This means riders from the north, riding south, will have Allsup’s as their southern-most stop; riders heading north will have Civic Plaza Dr. as their northern most stop. Questions about this, other Chile Line or Taos Express information www.TaosExpress.com, contact the Town of Taos Transportation Division at 575-751-4459.
2) The municipal pipe bursting/replacement project along Camino de Medio, from #240 to Canon, is tentatively slated to begin July 13. Traffic will still be allowed through as their project progresses, but it will be slowed somewhat. Advice is to avoid the area as you can. Questions? Contact Town of Taos Public Utilities, 575-751-2047 or atorres@taosgov.com.
3) The Taos Volunteer Fire Department has reported no incidents this past weekend attributed to fireworks. One of the reasons the Department and the Town sponsor the professional fireworks display each year is to provide enjoyment of such celebratory Fourth of July activities while minimizing personal fireworks use that might cause devastating area fires and injuries. It is also a wonderful holiday offering for both locals and visitors. This year the hour-long display cost the Town of Taos $20,000; the Taos Volunteer Fire Dept. $3,000; plus contributions from a few other sources bringing the approximate cost to $24,000.
