Another Gorge Bridge Suicide
The Taos Volunteer Fire Department reports that an as yet unidentified individual jumped off the Gorge Bridge yesterday, Friday, 12/5/08, at approximately 3:30 p.m. This was too late in the afternoon for a retrieval team, which would require a helicopter, to begin operations.
Therefore, this undertaking is being commenced today at approximately 9:30 a.m., and it is anticipated operations will extend to at least 4:30 p.m. Please be advised that while this retrieval is in progress, traffic on the Gorge Bridge may be interrupted, and pedestrian traffic across the bride will not be allowed.
Again, until a retrieval is complete, there is no way to definitely identify the individual. More information will be relayed by Taos Volunteer Fire Chief Jim Fambro, point for this operation, when it is available. His contact number for media representatives only is 575-770-5603 (please be advised Chief Fambro will not take media calls until late in the day after the retrieval operation is substantially complete).
UPDATE:
The operation to retrieve the suicide victim out of the Rio Grande Gorge is complete, according to the Taos Volunteer Fire Department. The Gorge Bridge is now fully open again to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
No definitive ID on the suicide has yet been made. TVFD indicated that all operations participants are safe -- including teams frmo the TVFD, Taos County Sheriffs, New Mexico State Police, and Town of Taos Police Department.
