The Harwood Museum of Art presents an Open Studio this Saturday, August 16^th with Barbara Penn. This free program will be held from 2-4pm at the Artist-in-Residence Studio located at the Museum’s 238 Ledoux Street complex.

Barbara Penn is a professor of Studio Art in Painting, Drawing and Combined Media at University of Arizona, Tucson, a position she has held since 1991. Penn received her MFA in painting from UC Berkeley where she studied with Joan Brown and Elmer Bischoff. In addition she holds a B.S in Art Education from SUNY and completed a summer study at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1975 where she met and befriended Agnes Martin.

Penn explains “What is in my immediate view provides rich subject matter for the work I make. Themes can range from the very banal to subjects more infinite. I combine text with elements of drawing and collage and often use a bold application of paint. Text, concept, figuration, abstraction and fusing media are all possible in the mix of contemporary painting. Taking advantage of paint’s directness, I attempt to unite what stays with me – conversations, poems, language and images – that I merge with personal experiences, observations and my current views of the world. I sometimes draw on biographical comparisons or identify parallels in simultaneous yet seemingly unrelated events.”

Visitors to Barbara Penn’s August 16^th open studio will not only get to see the works she has been creating while at the Harwood but also learn about her techniques, influences and background. A gifted teacher, Penn’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S, Europe and Canada. For more information call 758-9826 x 105.
