Born in northwest Illinois, Brian Caudillo has spent his lifetime developing his craft of carving authentic museum quality Kachinas. He is originally from Okay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo). His father is Sisston Souix, and his mother is Mexican –Apache. Brian currently lives with his wife Kristina and their six children in Las Vegas, Nevada. His children are also learning the tradition of carving as a way of daily life from their father.

Brian is influenced by the traditional Navajo and Hopi Katsina dolls, and ceremonial dancers, some of which you normally won’t see in the museums or books. Each piece is a hand selected root from a local cottonwood tree with a unique personality that Brian brings to life. Each piece has movement and form and represents the unvarnished timeless virtue of life. Smaller flat Kachinas were given to the children to remind them to be good, to invoke the power of the virtue into the individual.

Every one of the Kachinas has a different meaning. They represent things like rain that brings life, harvest and abundance of corn, fidelity and honesty, protection, and humor and humility. Brian uses natural pigment paints, and each and every piece has incredible movement.

Brian Two Hawks’ hand crafted Kachinas are prized by collectors and reside in the Smithsonian, the Gene Autry Museum, and the Washington State Museum.

Come and join us for a fantastic party to kick off Santa Fe’s Indian Market Weekend.
