HACIENDA HERITAGE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT EN DIVINA LUZ AND HACIENDA RECUERDOS

Taos - Taos Historic Museums presents Hacienda Heritage Photographs - En
Divina Luz: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico, a photographic exhibition
by Craig Varjabedian. The opening reception is Thursday, August 7 from
5:30 to 8 pm at la Hacienda de los Martinez on Lower Ranchitos Road.

En Divina Luz was published in 1994 by the University of New Mexico Press
and features Varjabedian’s photographs and an essay by Michael Wallis.
This book documents moradas of the Penitente Brotherhood, formally known
as La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno. This lay
Catholic organization is unique to New Mexico and southern Colorado. The
photographs and accompanying essay document the brotherhood’s buildings
and religious observances while respecting their privacy.

En Divina Luz is out of print, but Varjabedian will sign copies of his new
book Four & Twenty Photographs: Stories from Behind the Lens (UNM Press)
which includes his iconic photograph of Pete the zebra donkey taken to
celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Martinez Hacienda in 2004.

Guests at the opening will also enjoy local storyteller, Roberta Meyers
and will be able to sign up to share their memories of the hacienda
through the Taos Historic Museums’ Hacienda Recuerdos oral history
project.

The exhibit runs through December 31, 2008. For more information please
call 575-758-0505 or visit our website www.taoshistoricmuseums.org.

La Hacienda de los Martinez is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to
4 pm and on Sunday from noon to 4 pm. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for
children. A Saver Card is available for $12 for admission to both of our
museums, la Hacienda de los Martinez and the E.L. Blumenschein Home and
Museum.
