News Brief from Town of Taos #51, 6.13.08

1) Town of Taos Water: There is no E. coli contamination in the Town of Taos water supply, according to Town of Taos Public Utility Department representatives. This is communicated to reassure constituents given the current situation next door in El Prado. The Town of Taos’ system is flushed/treated constantly with appropriate chlorination through an automated system as water demand occurs. In addition, all Town sources are checked/tested twice a month, with results reviewed/validated through the State of New Mexico’s environmental system. Added isolation measures have been taken to protect the Town’s water sources while El Prado’s situation is corrected.

2) Town of Taos Regular Council Meeting Agenda, June 17 – agenda attached (6-17-08 rma.doc).

3) Expanded Taos Visitor Center Hours — The Town of Taos Visitor Center’s operations are extended for the busy summer traffic days. Open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with extended hours to 7 p.m. Thurs., Fri. and Sat. through August 30, 2008. Taos Plaza Information Kiosk is also open for the summer season, staffed mid-day by volunteers Thurs. - Sat. Want to volunteer and help welcome and guide tourists? Call Brenda Judges at 751-4648.

5) Taos Land Trust – Annual fund raiser, tomorrow, Saturday, June 14, Kachina Lodge — silent auction/live preview 2:30 - 5:30 p.m.; live auction 6 - 8:30 p.m.

6) Town of Taos Youth & Family Center events (Teen Dance; Aquarium & Zoo) – details attached.

7) New Mexico Cultural Music and Dance at its best — provided by local musicians and dancers. As Taos County says, “Don’t miss this great event and be sure to take the kids & grandkids, we need to promote these activities and keep our culture alive! For those of you who have never experienced these festive dances and music, it’s a must; take all the friends and neighbors and lets “tirar la chancla” (toss the shoes) and dance up a storm! Give Grandpa and Grandma a trip into memory lane, bring them with you and watch those smiles beam. Que Vivan Los Musicos! Que Vivan los Bailadores! Y Que Viva Juanita Cordova for making this possible! Mark your calendars for Saturday June 21, 1-5 pm at the Juan I Gonzales Agricultural Center (Chamisa Rd).” This is a program sponsored by the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area and Northern New Mexico College – details attached.

8) Update from Planning & Zoning Department, Town of Taos: The P&Z team issued the Smith’s fuel center permit this morning (13th) the management team of Smith’s has the demolition of the old building-slated for the week of the 30th (typically the notice to proceed is ten days) and then the actual construction of the fuel center will begin.

9) Youth & Family Center — Summer Swing Teen Dance — All Teens check us out on Friday, June 20, 2008 for a Summer Swing Teen Dance at the Taos Youth & Family Center from 7:00 PM—9:00 PM. Our D.J. will be playing all the hit music. Admission is free. Don’t miss out on the chance to hang out with your friends at the Taos Youth & Family Center. Teens bring your own glow in the dark wands. For more information call Judy at 758-4160. Albuquerque Aquarium & Rio Grande Zoo Field Trip — The Taos Youth & Family Center is providing the children of our community the opportunity to attend out of town field trips. The first field trip planned for the summer is for 6-12 year olds to the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and the Rio Grande Zoo on Thursday, June 19, 2008 from 7:30 AM—8:00 PM. The cost will be $12.00, which includes entry fees. The Summer Food Program run by the Taos Municipal Schools will be providing everyone with breakfast and lunch. You may also send your child with a sack lunch. Registration will begin Thursday, June 12, through Wednesday, June 18, 2008. All registrations must be made in person at the Taos Youth & Family Center. No field trip registrations can be made over the telephone. Limited space is available. Payments for field trip will not be taken until the day of the field trip. Please provide the exact amount in cash, no checks! 10) Race Across America comes through Taos this afternoon and tomorrow, June 12 and 13th – The Taos Cycle Club indicates this event’s positive impacts for the area including “250 vehicles likely stopping for gas at $50-$80 each; lodging of perhaps a couple dozen nights total; and the purchase of food and supplies to be estimated at $5-$8,000”.
