Town of Taos News Brief #48 June 3, 2008
1) Taos County constituents – reminder to vote today.
2) Attached: Planning & Zoning Commission meeting agenda for tomorrow, Wednesday, June 4, 2008.
3) Town Hall and the Taos Public Library, Town of Taos, will be closed starting at 4 p.m. this Thursday, June 5th. Both should reopen as usual on Friday, June 6th. This closure is due to a planned electrical transfer that is part of the Town Hall expansion construction. With electricity down to these locations, computers, phones and fee/payment processing cannot occur – therefore the closure.
4) Parking meter two-hour free pilot program in Town of Taos Historic District. Parking meter decals are up early – and the entire historic district should be decal-complete by tomorrow to denote ‘two hour free parking’. A map is attached for all-day parking lot locations in the Town, including free on-street parking on Paseo del Pueblo Norte.
5) Conventions, Groups and Meetings, Town of Taos: The Town’s Convention Department has made great strides in connecting with national and international organizations to improve travel to Taos from among these categories. Part of this activity has resulted in improved tourism data – and below is a link that focuses on Monthly U.S. Lodging Performance for April, provided by Smith Travel Research (STR). According to STR, they are a provider of accurate, actionable information and analysis to the lodging industry including all major North American hotel chains and a growing number of chains in Europe and Asia. Individual hotels, management companies, appraisers, consultants, lenders and other lodging industry analysts also rely on STR data for the accuracy they require. 6) The 4th in the Terminator film series, called T4 (Project Angel) will be filming on the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge in Taos this coming Tuesday, June 10th (activity starts June 5). Given that the film is set after a nuclear explosion, the company needs a couple of days to prepare and strike their set. This is a closed set, which means the public cannot watch the filming (except from a distance). Following is the notification received from the T4 company:
We are planning on filming the Taos Gorge Bridge on Tuesday June, 10, 2008. The filming will occur during daylight hours (6a - 8p).
Our scene involves a car chase on the bridge. Unlike most movies that film roads, our film occurs after a nuclear explosion. Therefore we will place wrecked cars on the bridge as set dressing. We will add greens/sand/etc. to make the set look “overgrown.” Because of the unusual nature of our film we plan to dress the bridge for 2 days, shoot 1 day and strike 2 days. The schedule is as follows:
June 5: Variable message boards installed (see TCP for locations)
June 7: Wrecked cars trucked up from ABQ and stored in the NMDOT rest area parking lot located on the West side of the bridge.
June 8: Set dressing begins. 30min intermittent traffic control (ITC) begins at 8 am, and will continue 24hrs/day, conducted by Taos County deputies, until we are off the road. Possible helicopter plate shots on this day.
June 9: dressing and ITC continue. Possible helicopter plate shots.
June 10: filming. Helicopter shots, stunt driving, chase car.
June 11: strike (wrecked cars moved to rest area parking lot). 30min ITC continues. Possible helicopter plate shots.
June 12: strike. Possible helicopter plate shots. 30min ITC continues until 8p, when we’re off the road completely.
June 13: wrecked cars pulled from rest area parking lot.
The project has permits from NMDOT District #5, the Taos BLM, and we are working on an agreement with the Taos Pueblo. We have notified the following agencies — Taos Sheriff¹ Department; Taos Volunteer Fire Department; Bobby Duran (Mayor of Taos); Abigail Adame (Taos Town Manager).
