When visiting the pueblos, however, one needs to be respectful of their customs and traditions. Photography is prohibited in the pueblos.
The San Ildefonso Pueblo, the most visited of the eight northern pueblos, is located just 23 miles from Santa Fe. This pueblo is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the spectacular Rio Grande, which runs through it, as well as the magnificent nearby Pajarito Plateau and the Black Mesa, which has come to symbolize this people's strength. The pueblo boasts a fishing lake, open to the public from April to October, as well as the nearby San Ildefonso Pueblo and Maria Poveka Martinez museums. In addition, the pueblo holds a tribal Animal Dance every January 23 at dawn.
The San Juan Pueblo is the the largest of the eight northern pueblos and the headquarters of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council. Here, tourists can visit the Oke-Oweenge Crafts Cooperative, which displays artwork from all eight of the northern pueblos. This area is also home to the OhKay Casino, where tourists can enjoy playing Roulette and dining at their superb buffet. Although the San Juan Pueblo was the first to be colonized by the Spanish, today, the natives mainly practice their traditional religious rituals. The San Juan Pueblo hosts several exciting annual cultural events.
