News Brief #41 Town of Taos, May 2, 2008



1) Participate in the ‘world’s largest coffee break’, this Saturday, May 10th, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Cid’s Market, the Taos Farmer’s Market (in the Enos Garcia Elementary School’s parking lot next to Town Hall), and Kit Caron Park’s Arts & Crafts Fair as the Town of Taos participates in global efforts to promote Fair Trade. This Saturday’s simultaneous, global ‘coffee break’, sponsored by the Town of Taos Fair Trade Steering Committee, offers free 4 oz. cups of Fair Trade coffee and information at the above locations, in addition to information at Twirl and Sustaining Cultures. These efforts are to assist the public in learning exactly what ‘Fair Trade’ is, and to offer easy actions that can be taken locally to support this ‘market movement’. Sign up sheets will be in circulation May 10th at the noted locations to support the effort and stay updated on upcoming programs such as youth education, group endorsements, new local Fair Trade offerings, and a Fair Trade merchant directory. 2) State of New Mexico Department of Transportation: Road Work To Begin on US 64: El Prado – Crews, on May 13, will begin work on US 64, south of Placitas Road to mile marker 253 in El Prado, according to District Five of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Work will consist of a roadway rehabilitation which includes a mill & overlay, curb & gutter, drainage improvements, new signalization at Hail Creek Road, ADA and pedestrian improvements. There will also be a continuous left turn lane through the length of the project. Crews anticipate working both day and night hours. Tentatively, day shifts will occur between 8 am and 4 pm while night shifts will occur between 6 pm and 4 am. The project is scheduled for substantial completion by November 2008. Final completion is scheduled for June 2009, when the final layer of pavement will be laid due to warmer temperatures. The current estimated cost of this project is approximately $4 million. 3) Mother’s Day Project -- Mother’s Day is this weekend. Join the Town of Taos Youth & Family Center to make that special card or gift this Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Youth & Family Center from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. This event is FREE for children ages 6 through 11 who will use their imagination to create fun crafts for mom and grandma. Children age 6 and 7 need to be accompanied by an adult. Materials and examples will be provided, just bring your imagination. For more information call Judy at 758-4160.

4) A QUORUM OF THE TOWN COUNCIL MAY BE PRESENT at an assembly for a motivational speaker for the youth of Taos -- Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 8:15 & 9:30 a.m. at Taos Middle School located at 234 Paseo del Canon East and/or 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Taos High School located at 134 Cervantes. The Council will not take action on any items.
