Town of Taos News Brief – Water is Fine

1) Water: The Town of Taos Public Utilities Department has received calls today about an alleged news story, possibly out of Colorado, representing that Town of Taos water is unsafe for drinking. This is not true. We cannot locate the source of the rumor, but wish to reassure our constituents that there is no problem with the quality of Town of Taos water. The State of New Mexico has also had this rumor flagged for them by Town representatives, and also verifies that there is no problem with the Town’s water quality.

2) Meeting Reminder: There is no Town of Taos Council meeting this Tuesday – the regular meeting night. This month’s meeting is this Thursday evening, 6:30 p.m., March 20, Town of Taos Council Chambers, Civic Plaza Drive. In addition to the meeting (agenda previously sent out), a public reception will be hosted by the Town to acknowledge and thank outgoing council members for their service, and welcome new ones.

3) Pot Holes: The Town of Taos ‘Pot Hole Hotline’ has only received a handful of calls since its launch last week, and the majority have been referred to the appropriate agencies for attention, namely the State of New Mexico and Taos County. The pot holes were not in streets within the Town of Taos’ jurisdiction. The hotline is 575-751-2042, and the hotline email address is pothole@taosgov.com.

4) Taos SmartCode: Public meetings about the SmartCode move forward (one last night and one today). It is being suggested to the Mayor and Council that they consider ‘applying’ the new code’s approach in select areas of the Town of Taos to assist in helping constituents focus on precisely what the proposed code means for them, their property and their overall community. It is thought that through this type of preliminary, controlled pre-application that property owners and others will be able to better understand in a layperson context what the new code may mean for them and neighborhood livability – they’ll be able to interact with what’s proposed and comment on what they believe works, and what does not. Part of the discussion is also about the proposed ‘Consolidated Review Committee’ which would be part of the SmartCode’s enactment, and could enable administrative approvals of building requests. The discussion focuses on the committee’s function and what their precise discretionary decision-making parameters might be.
