Town of Taos News Brief & “Secret Shopper”
1) Major Media in Taos – Heads Up: We have a credible heads-up that there will soon be a writer in Town from a national publication who will be doing some “secret shopping” as part of the story being completed. Please keep our great Taos customer service rolling – as always – so the report reflects a wonderful experience.

3) Parking Meter Program in Historic District – The Council revisited the parking meter program moving forward in the Town of Taos Historic District and will be a) leaving the two hour free parking hoods in place around Taos Plaza, while b) a ‘two hour free parking signage program’ is put in place so that over the coming year this expanded pilot program can be further researched with the involvement of all parking meters in the Town’s Historic District. Issues being monitored during this expanded program included, but are not limited to: local employee-parking misuse of the spaces; increased visitor business/positive comments along with increased locals’ patronage; impacts on revenues from the meters themselves after the two hour mark; impacts on parking fine revenues which earlier this year went from $5 to $10; any other improvements that might be made once this expanded pilot is concluded.
4) Added Taos Marketing Funds – The Council has approved $70,000 in addition marketing funds for Griffin & Associates’ public relations/marketing/advertising contract. Their objective is a 5% in ‘heads on beds’ this year. With the addition of these monies, the Griffin contract for promotion this fiscal year is $176,000, in addition to matching funds, in-kind contributions, and added monies outside of this contract that the Town has spent on direct marketing. These added monies spent by the Town, from lodgers tax and general fund revenues, currently include:
$30,000 direct mail fulfillment/postage for visitor information;
$30,000 for Convention/Meetings direct marketing/ads to bring conferences, meetings and events to Taos;
$40,000 Taos Gallery Association – direct marketing/advertising;
$10,000 New Mexico Women in the Arts, Originals 2007 – Harwood and Millicent Rogers Museums – direct advertising;
$5,000 Santa Fe Film Festival marketing/advertising;
$5,000 Taos Solar Fest marketing/advertising;
$5,000 for Burrell’s Luce free media clipping service;
$12,000 Fiestas de Taos marketing/advertising;
$15,000 local professional services contract with Jan Mellor for media coordination/convention marketing/promotional content;
$6,000 Taos County Chamber marketing/advertising/outreach – tourist bus tour networking, Japan international travel for ‘Fam Trip’
This brings the overall direct marketing fund total to approximately $334,000.00 this fiscal year.
