Sipapu Ski Area in Northern New Mexico is a 40 minute drive southeast of Taos. Its family friendly atmosphere has been attracting more skiers each year since its beginning in 1952. The family friendly traditions have been carefully preserved, with snowboarding and disc golf also a draw for the younger set.

Free passes for area honor roll students is another popular tradition. Though full day passes are an affordable $27 to $34 for children through teens, the free honor roll program allows some to ski who otherwise might have to pass it up for cost reasons. Many a carload of Taos Middle School, High School and Charter School children unloads there every weekend.

I don’t have any connection with Sipapu, however I appreciate their dedication to affordable fun for families. We dropped off some girls this morning and drove up the road a short mile or two for a brisk snowshoeing adventure. Normally, “adventure” would be a bit over the top, but in trying to cross a stream on a snow pack, I fell through. Apart from a few scared trout, no harm was done. But that stream water certainly was cold!
