wild horse movie “The American Wild Horse examines the politics behind the Bureau of Land Management’s controversial policies regarding wild horses on public lands and questions the fate of America’s wild horses. Through interviews with scientific experts, ranchers, historians, wild horse owners, animal rights activists, and others, we look at the origins and effects of the recent “Burns Bill” which gutted the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 and cleared the way for the slaughter and removal of a vast majority of these symbols of the American West.” Featuring Viggo Mortensen, Sheryl Crow and Peter Coyote.

MOVIES AT THE TCA

Black Orpheus “Black Orpheus”

Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m.

The first time I saw this film I was stunned by its ability to tell its story in cinematic simplicity and honesty. Black Orpheus places the Orpheus myth in Rio de Janeiro at the time of Carnival. Marcel Camus’ film is fast paced, beautifully photographed and has lovely and vibrant music by Luis Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The vital, throbbing tempo propels the story forward in an almost choreographic manner, set in a mythical Brazil with haunting images in soft pagan shadows and old Greek memory. A film about desire and hate, revenge and death, Black Orpheus won the Palm d’Or in 1959 at Cannes. It was seen as a progressive film because it featured black actors and the pluralistic culture of modern Brazil. It also gave outsiders a view into ritualistic, non-Western culture, which is why it is so important to cinema.
Movie description by our film programmer, Peter Halter.

“Black Orpheus is a remarkably joyful and exuberant affair, unfolding in a heady swirl of color, dancing and movement.”
- Tom Dawson, BBCi.films
