Stereotypes, Snowboards and Real Estate Agents

In some circles and settings, I am reluctant to talk about my major income source, real estate brokerage. I instead mention my writing and consulting careers. However, I make the money to pay the bills as a real estate broker. It’s just that there are a number of people out there with less-than-glowing opinions of Realtors®.
In many cases, their opinions are not based on real-life experience, but more on media or other stereotypical portrayals of real estate agents and brokers. This is unfortunate, as we’re all tarred by the same brush. Well, it works both ways. The commentary going on about snowboards at Taos Ski Valley recently yielded a comment that I found to be an example. Here’s the quote from this article: “They bring their lunch to the mountain instead of buying it,” says Liz Jamison, a real-estate agent and ski instructor at Taos for 22 years.
I have a step daughter who boards. As I write this, she is in Angel Fire, as Taos won’t allow it yet. And, before she left, her mother shelled out the money for lunch. That’s a lunch and lift ticket that won’t be purchased in Taos. And she’s with four LOCAL friends doing precisely the same thing. I don’t ski or board, so I have no axe to grind in this debate. I do have a distaste for portrayals of real estate professionals as boorish, pushy sales people. Then again, it looks like derogatory comments work both ways.
